All about Chain Slings

Wire rope slings and Alloy steel chain slings  are one of the most common types of lifting slings used for lifting. They are used for lifting heavy items on work sites. When using a chain to build a sling the tolerance for chain is considered as its main building block of the sling.

Wire rope slings are available in one, two, three and four leg configurations. There are various components used in the making of chain sling some of them being head ring used at the top of the sling, chain connectors.
When using a chain sling it is important to make sure you are using the correct chain sling. The angle at which the load is lifted matters a lot. The wider the angle, lesser the working load limit.

When used in rigorous material handling applications, chain can easily become corroded or worn. It is always mandatory to inspect the chain slings for defects on regular basis before using it to ensure safe lifting. If the chain corrodes it leads to the decreased strength of the chain.

Stretch or elongation are clear signs of overloading. A standard such as ASME B30.9 Slings links stretch or elongation as one of the reason a of removing wire rope slings, alloy steel chain slings from service.

The reason for corrosion are many, one of them being coming in contact with harsh chemicals, water or when it is used in tough environments.

Wear can happen only in part of the link that is in contact with another surface. There are two points where corrosion can occur majorly

 1) At the bearing points of interlink contact
 2) On the outsides of the chain

When the wire rope slings, Alloy steel chain slings or any kind of sling  gets corroded the next step is to determine how severe  the damage is and if the chain can still be safely used or not.

Generally surface corrosion can be removed by cleaning and oiling the chain.

So, while choosing a chain sling we should make sure to use one having high tensile strength as it has many advantages, they are strong, reliable, flexible and if taken proper care they can last long.

There are many rope slings manufacturers in India. Balbir Singh and sons are ISO & CE Certified Distributors and suppliers of high grade Usha Martin chain slings and Wire rope slings.
